Taiwan International Balloon Festival returns to Taitung for its 7th year with 39 hot air balloons

Taiwan’s most visually stunning festival is back and bigger than ever!

TAITUNG, April 21, 2018 -- The 7th annual Taiwan International Balloon Festival takes place in Taitung on Taiwan’s east coast from June 30th to August 13th, 2018. Directed by Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) and organized by Taitung County Government, this spectacular 6-week long festival defines Taiwan’s eastern horizon each year, with dozens of hot air balloons taking to the sky.

Founded in 2011 by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s Deputy Director General Shu-Hui Chen, this fabulous event has gone from strength-to-strength, with more hot air balloons participating each year. This year it is planned that 39 balloons from Taiwan and around the world will launch into the heavens and cruise above some of the most striking landscapes in the world.

Several hot air balloons of famous cultural icons are expected to be a particular pull for crowds, including a Minion from the Despicable Me series, the hot air balloon from Disney Pixar’s movie Up, as well a balloon in the shape of the famous Brazilian landmark Christ The Redeemer. These and other foreign hot air balloons will be welcomed by a hot air balloon of Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s mascot OhBear, as well as several others from Taiwan.

Not only are there more hot air balloons than previous years, but Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang decided to extend the festival by an extra week this year to 45 days, with the purpose of giving more visitors to Taitung the opportunity to enjoy this uniquely dazzling experience.

Beyond the hot air balloons themselves, a series of concerts will be held across the county, a light show at National Taitung University Library, as well as a special show in conjunction with an open house at Taitung Air Force Base, combining hot air balloons in flight, a display of military fighter aircraft and a musical performance.
