Taichung and Hsinchu City announced as host cities for 2020 and 2021 Lantern Festivals respectively.
The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, after holding the "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" and the "2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival" hosting city and county selection process, reported the results of its findings and decisions to the Executive Yuan on January 30, 2019. It has decided that the "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be held in Taichung City and the "2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be held in Hsinchu City, which has not held the Taiwan Lantern Festival before.
According to the Taichung City Government’s plans, the "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" is scheduled to be held at the "2018 Central Taiwan Flora Expo” park’s Houli Horse Ranch, Fengyuan Huludun Park and Shuinan Central Park. The reasons for the selection committee’s decision to choose Taichung is because the Taichung City Government will combine the surrounding counties of Miaoli, Changhua and Nantou and other nearby attractions in planning 1 or 2-day travel itineraries to attract visitors to the area. This can promote regional tourism development and expand tourism benefits. Most of the festival venues will use the "2018 Taiwan International Flora Expo” site. The transportation facilities have been verified. The benefits of the tourism spillover and the efficiency of holding the festival in Taichung are high. The Taichung City Government is preparing to and has promised to raise NT$400 million to host the festival, which is much higher than that of other bidding counties and cities. The selection committee also wanted to choose a location close to major tourism attractions, to maximize the tourism benefits from this festival.
The Hsinchu City Government is planning to hold the "2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival" in the Old City. The Hsinchu City Government will cooperate with the "Pedestrian City Project," which is actively being promoted, to light up the green spaces of the parks in the old city. This will create the best lantern viewing effect and can be directly linked to the local industries to create more tourism benefits. Holding the festival there has the advantages of the ambience of an ancient city. The venue is close to the Hsinchu Train Station, so transportation will be convenient. And there are advantages from the city having a strong technology and glass manufacturing industry. These are reasons why the selection committee favored Hsinchu City.
The Director General of the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Mr. Chou Yung-hui, said that the Taiwan Lantern Festival is an important national festival event. The bureau is planning to advance international marketing and preparations for the festival. By announcing the host cities for the next two lantern festivals early, there will be sufficient time for making preparations. The host cities of the 31st "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" and the 32nd "2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival" were selected partly with the need for regional rotation in mind, and to give counties and cities which have not hosted the Taiwan Lantern Festival a chance to hold the festival and in so doing, promote their local attractions and local industries’ development. The Taiwan Lantern Festival has been held in the south for two consecutive years. In 2020 and 2021, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held in the central and northern regions respectively. After the "Taiwan Lantern Festival Selection Review Committee" was organized, experts and scholars were invited to conduct comprehensive evaluations on the competing cities and counties’ venues, traffic environment, hospitality, safety management, tourism promotion plans and fundraising capabilities. The results of the committee’s decisions are that the "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be held in Taichung City and the "2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be held in Hsinchu City, which has not held the Taiwan Lantern Festival before.
The "2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be held in Pingtung from February 19th to March 3rd. The closing ceremony will be held on the evening of March 3. At that time, the Taichung City Government team will participate in the closing ceremony and take over the responsibility and glory of hosting next year's Lantern Festival. We hope to see everyone at the "2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival" in Taichung!
